An improvement in optical magnetometers whereby the accuracy of the output signal is increased. The depumping frequency is determined by measuring the time interval for a predetermined number of cycles to occur. Error due to sweeping the depumping frequency is prevented by making the sweep frequency a sub-multiple of the depumping frequency.
