H2S contg. gas (I) is contacted in the presence of a free O2 contg. gas (II) with a catalyst compsn. (V) contg. at least one metal from Gp. IIIB and/or Gp. IVB of the Periodic Table supported on a SiO2 carrier (VII) for oxidn. to an elemental sulphur and/or SO2 prod. - Metal is pref. present in compsn. (V) as its oxide e.g. Ti, Zr or Th oxide, or as its sulphate. Gas (II) may be O2 enriched air or pure O2. Compsn. (V) is esp. in the form of spheres and contains at least 90 wt.% of carrier (VII). To obtain a sulphur prod. the amt. of free O2 present is pref. 50 vol.% of gas (I) and the temp. is 180 to 250 deg. C; H2S is feed for sulphur prodn. is esp. obtd. by redn. of Claus tail gas above 175 deg. C with a free H2 or CO contg. gas in the presence of a Gp. VI and/or Gp. VIII sulphided metal catalyst. To obtain SO2 prod. pref. a 20 to 280% stoichiometric amt. of free O2 is present and the temp. is 250 to 450 deg. C.
