In a process for metal working by chip removal, parting or abrasion, the coolant - lubricant used contains: (a) a fluorochlorinated hydrocarbon (pref. 1-2C and of b.pt. above 20 deg. C.); and (b) 0.5-25 (pref. 0.5-5) wt.% of 34-50C esters from long-chain carboxylic acids and monoalcohols, and/or their sulpho-chlorinated or sulphided derivs. Component (a) has pref. concn. 99.5-75 (esp.99.5-95) wt.%. - Component (a) is e.g. trichloromonofluoromethane, 1,1,2-trichloro -1,2,2-trifluoroethane, 1,1,2,2-tetrachloro difluoroethane, etc. To avoid excessive evapn. rate of this component, up to 35 (pref. up to 15)% of it may be replaced by an appropriate, toxicologically inoffensive solvent, usually with higher b.pt., e.g. 3-4C aliphatic ketones, and esp. ethanol and n- and i-propanol. - Used in working Mg, Al, Ti, brass, bronze, steel, etc., component (b) reduces the work required, esp. in drilling, milling and cutting of heavy pieces. Corrosion inhibitors, esp. of the oxazoline type, increase this effect. Cuttings removal is good. There is practically no greasy deposit on the workpiece. The compsn. is toxicologically acceptable. (0/0) DEAB- DE3342852 C Lubricant and coolants for metal processing comprises one or more 34-50C esters of higher carboxylic acids and alkanols and/or their chlorosulphonated or sulphided derivs. (0.5-25 wt.%) and opt. additives (e.g. corrosion inhibitors), in a volatile 1-2C fluorochloroalkane (75-99.5 wt.%) with b.p. not above 20C. Pref. part of the solvent (up to 35 wt.%) may be replaced with a 1-5C alkanol.
