Thiazole derivs. of formula (I), in which R1 is H, lower alkyl, aralkyl or other, X is O, S or CH2, and n is a whole number e.g. 1 or 2, are made by (a) treating a nitrile of formula (II) with a thiol or thiophenol in presence of a catalyst, e.g. HCl at 0-25 deg.C for 5 hrs. to 10 days to obtain thio-imidates of formula (III); and (b) treating (III) with a nitrogenated cpd. e.g. NH4Cl, gaseous ammonia, methylamine or other, in a solvent, e.g. methanol, at 20-70 deg.C for 2-72 hrs. to give (I).
