Prodn. of SiH4 is effected by reacting SiF4 with MgH2 in an alkali(ne earth) metal halide melt under an H2 partial pressure greater than the dissociation pressure of the MgH2 at the melt temp. - Pref. the melt is a eutectic mixt. of alkali metal chlorides contg. 0.5-20 (esp. 5-15) wt.% KF, RbF or CsF. The hydride ion concn. is at least 0.3 wt.%. An excess of H2 is maintained in the head space of the reactor. The MgH2 may be formed in situ in the melt from Mg and H2.
