The electrode includes a contact surface (4) which is applied to the skin, a non-flexible part (3) which grips the shank of the electrically conducting plate (1) as well as a seal (2) which encloses the plate (1). The seal (2) has an outer sealing ring (9) which stretches around the circumference of the electrode plate ending in a sealing lip (13). A suction hose or pipe (8) is connected to a hollow space between the electrode contact surface (4) and the seal (2) to create a vacuum chamber. A screened electric lead (7) running in the hose connects the electrode to the measuring instrument. - The electrode plate and the sealing lip (13) are movable relative to each other and under the influence of the pressure exerted by spring (17). When the electrode is pressed against the skin, a valve is actuated and the resulting suction holds the electrode stable in position. The sealing lip (13) is pliable, but not excessively so, to enable a seal to be achieved over a curved surface.
