A chewing gum compsn. comprises 14-35wt.% inert inorganic filler and 16-30wt.% of a gum base polymer other than styrene-butadiene rubber type. Part of the filler is included in the gum base and the rest is incorporated after formation of the gum base. - The filler is e.g. Al hydroxide, alumina, Mg carbonate, dicalcium phosphate, talc, Mg trisilicate, Mg hydroxide, Al silicate, silica gel or esp. Ca carbonate. It pref. forms 20-35wt.% of the gum base, while a further 10-30wt.% is added later, based on the wt. of the final compsn. The gum base pref. comprises polyisobutylene, polyisoprene, or isobutylene-isoprene copolymer, opt. combined with natural materials, e.g. rubber latex, chicle, crown gum or perillo. The compsn. contains 30-70, esp. 55-65wt.% sugar, corn syrup solids and/or sugar alcohols, etc., and opt. other sweeteners e.g. saccharin, Aspartame (RTM), stevioside, etc. The usual flavourings are used in amts. ranging from 0.5-2wt.%. - The compsn. contains more filler than conventional chewing gums, so it exhibits less shrinkage during use. It is very soft both before and during mastication, and has good film-forming properties. The amt. of sugar present can be reduced without redn. in sweetness.
