The superconducting wire (41a,41b) for the coil (11) is made up from the superconductor (21a,21b) and a medium (31) in which it is embedded. In a thin coil winding e.g. part of a particle collision generator, the superconductor (21a) in the end turns (11a) has a larger area than in the centre section (11b,21b,41b) of the coil (11). Alternatively, the same wire dimensions are used throughout and each end section wound with two layers in parallel or similar configuration. By increasing the conducting area the current density is reduced. This in turn reduces the magnetic field at the ends of the coil which links with the windings and thus reduces the tendency for the superconducting state to collapse.
