PURPOSE:To obtain a carbon material having high strength without using an impregnation process, by baking an organic fiber is an inert gas atmosphere, mixing with a specific carbon powder, forming the mixture without using a binder, and baking the product. CONSTITUTION:An organic fiber is baked at >=400 deg.C in an inert gas atmosphere, mixed with carbon fiber, and formed without using a binder. The formed article is baked to obtain a high-strength carbon material having a flexural strength of >=700kg/cm<2>. The carbon powder used in the above procedure is the one having a carbon content of >=92wt%, volatile loss of 7-20wt% at <=900 deg.C, linear shrinkage of the formed article of <=6% at <=500 deg.C, and an average particle diameter of <=40mu. The organic fiber is the fiber of synthetic polymer such as polyacrylonitrile, rayon, etc. or a pitch fiber made from petroleum or coal pitch. |
