The device comprises two displacement sensors (1, 2) arranged side by side on a stationary support (3) of the machine. A pendulum comprises a rod (5) which supports, at one of its ends, a conducting element (4) capable of swinging in front of the sensors (1, 2), and, at the other end, a magnetic head (6) situated in proximity to a collar (8) of the shaft (9) of the machine whose thermal expansion is to be detected. The pendulum is suspended from the centre of the stationary support (3) by an elastic blade (7). The magnetic head (6) comprises a plurality of permanent magnets (10) arranged in a zig-zag. The device improves the precision and the detection of the axial displacement of the shaft (9) of the machine when this shaft is subjected to temperature variations. <IMAGE>
