The tubes or tubular shaped parts (1) to be tested are subjected while suspended in a temperature-controlled water bath (3) to a hydrostatic pressure on the inside which is produced by the adjustable pressure of a gaseous medium - preferably compressed air. Arranged successively in the pressure line (2) are a restrictor (10), a cut-off member (11) constructed as a solenoid valve, and a pressure switch (12), which are operationally connected by a control circuit to one another and to a signalling device (14) and a time-measuring device (15). In the event of a pressure drop due to a leak in the part to be tested, the cut-off member (11) is immediately closed, the signalling device (14) is switched on and the time-measuring device (15), which has been running since the start of the test, is switched off. <IMAGE>
