The filter elements (1) are conveyed over a rotating cleaning brush (3) in a cleaning chamber (4). The dirt particles which are stripped off are sucked out of the cleaning chamber (4) by means of a suction device (7). The filter element (1) is conveyed through the cleaning chamber in a guide tube (8) which has a cutout (9) only in the working region of the cleaning brush (3). Consequently, air is sucked in by the cleaning device (7) over the inside of the filter element (1) and led directly over the cleaning region. In this way, the stripping of the dirt particles from the surface of the filter is facilitated. <IMAGE>
