To carry out the method, tickets on which at least the machine-readable data of the issuing station is recorded are used. To check the validity of the tickets, portable devices are used, into which at least one entry relating to the route section in which the check is carried out is entered manually. For checking, the ticket is inserted in the device, which reads the recorded issuing station and stores it, with the entered route section, in an intermediate memory. When the checking is finished, the content of each intermediate memory is transferred to a main memory. The data collected in the main memory can be evaluated using a suitable data processing system. The method makes it possible to determine the traffic flows almost continuously, with a precision which was not possible with earlier methods, and without additional staff costs.
