A capillary is described for gas chromatography, in particular a plastic-coated quartz glass capillary which, to increase the mechanical and thermal strength and to prevent harmful breakages, is provided with a casing which is composed of fibre-reinforced plastic material and/or a woven tube or/and a wrapping made of fibres. The casing made of fibre-reinforced plastic can be produced in such a way that the capillary is coated with a plastic material and that during or after the coating, fibres are embedded in the plastic layer. Special embodiments of the capillary and particular and other processes for the production of a capillary having a casing are described. It is also proposed, for the production of a quartz glass capillary, to use a tube made of lower melting doped quartz glass. <IMAGE>
