To achieve a high printing speed, in known series printers, printing continues even during the return movement of the print head into the position at the beginning of the line. The invention is based on the object of making such bidirectional printing possible even in thermal printers, in which the ink ribbon (11) remains unchanged during the printing movement of the print head relative to the recording medium (1), and a supply spool (16) in the cartridge (12) feeds the ink ribbon (11) and a winding spool (17) takes up the ink ribbon (11) to the same extent as the ink ribbon (11) is moved with the print head (9) relative to the carriage (3). This object is achieved in that the ink ribbon (11), which can be driven by a drive device, is fed through the holder (13) with two sections (18, 19) running one above the other and in opposite directions to one another, in that the holder (13) is arranged so as to be vertically adjustable by means of a reversing device arranged on the carriage (3) to set one of the two sections (18, 19) in the operating position relative to the print head (9), and in that the ink ribbon (11) is unwound from the supply spool (16) and wound onto the winding spool (17) at a speed which corresponds to the carriage movement. As a result, bidirectional printing is achieved in a simple manner with optimum utilisation of the ink ribbon. <IMAGE>
