A smooth top cooking unit comprises a glass top (14) and rapid response radiant heaters (17), such as tungsten halogen lamps. A temperature limiting control is connected to prevent excessive temperatures from occurring in such smooth glass top and provides a temperature sensing probe (19) extending across the unit between the heaters and the smooth top. Premature cycling of the heaters by the control is avoided by providing a heat shield along the probe which reduces the direct transmission of radiant heat from the lamps to the probe. In some embodiments illustrated, the shield is structured to reduce the sensitivity of the probe to radiant heat emanating from the heaters while increasing the sensitivity of the probe to radiant heat emanating from the smooth top. In other embodiments, the shield functions to reduce the sensitivity of the probe to radiant heat reaching the probe from all directions. <IMAGE> |
