A process for producing vitreous carbon electrodes by hardening and pyrolysis of duroplastic carbonisable resins, characterised in that 1-10 weight % of a pyrolysable organic fatty alcohol or fatty acid derivative of the general formula RCOOR' with at least 14 carbon atoms in added to the resin and that the resin is spread on a hydrophobic substrate in a thin layer and is then hardened and pyrolysed.
