1392324 Laminated electrical connector block INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS Ltd 2 March 1973 [28 March 1972] 14404/72 Heading B5N An electrical connector block 10 having a matrix array of conductive elements 5 embedded in and extending through it is manufactured by preparing a plurality of elastomeric sheets or tapes (particularly of silicone or neoprene rubber, or polyurethane) each having at least one group of parallel spaced apart electrically conductive elements extending across one surface thereof, assembling and aligning the sheets one upon the other and bonding them together. Apparatus (not claimed) for forming the connector includes a roll 2 of the elastomeric material, an adhesive applicator 3, means 4 for applying the conductive elements which may be micro springs made from beryllium-copper or phosphorbronze wire, the ends of which may be "domed" by deposition of gold or platinum, a guillotine 6 for cutting the tape (carrying spaced groups of elements) into lengths and a press 9 for consolidating the lengths into a solid block by pressure and/or heat either together with the use of an adhesive or by using partly-cured rubber or a B-stage polyurethane as the sheet material. The groups of micro springs may be formed as a unit in a comb or ladder-like structure (Figs. 3 and 4) by an etching, chemical milling or fine blanking process. |
