Process for producing an orientation layer for a liquid-crystal display

In the production of orientation layers for the liquid-crystal molecules of a liquid-crystal display, a covering layer (2) is bombarded obliquely by a jet of particles which contains macroscopic particles (5), in particular glass beads of a diameter less than 100 mu m. The striking particles (5) have the effect of producing on the surface of the covering layer (2) bead-like deformations, which cause a tilting forward of adjacent liquid-crystal molecules at a comparatively high angle. The process allows the use of organic polymer covering layers with good insulating properties and permits the simple texturing of large areas. <IMAGE>
