A stand (10) for a camera or for another optical apparatus is described, with a stand head (12) from which stand legs (14) extend downwards with telescopic tubes (16, 18) which can be pushed into one another. The telescopic tubes (16, 18) can be locked by means of a fixing device, which has an operating rod (20), on the front end region of which two clamping cones (22, 24) which taper in the same direction are arranged. Each clamping cone (22, 24) is enclosed by a pressure element (26, 28), which pressure elements (26, 28) press against the inside wall of the outer telescopic tube (18) when the fixing device is in its normal position, so that there is frictional engagement between the two telescopic tubes (16, 18), which engagement can be manually overcome. <IMAGE>
