In the division of steel bars (7) rolled from billets (1) into bars (13) of saleable length (14) ready for dispatch, each billet (1) is preferably weighed and divided up initially into cooling-bed bars (7', 7'', 7'''...) in accordance with the weight per metre of the steel bar (7) in such a way that the length of the said bars is either an integral multiple of the saleable length (14) or greater than or equal to the useful length, after the carrying out of a check measurement the length of steel bar which is still to be rolled out and the residual end (22) which is to be expected from this furthermore being determined. In order to be able reliably to sort out the residual end irrespective of the previously selected cutting pattern while retaining full utilisation of the installation as a whole, the useful length (21) is in each case determined for an entire rolling batch and if, after the result of the correction measurement has been obtained, the length of the last cooling-bed bar would be less than the useful length, the residual end is either left on the penultimate cooling-bed bar or, following the subdivision of the latter, on the cooling-bed bars preceding the last bar. <IMAGE> |
