A row of holes (a) is drilled in a flange (b); and holes (a) are ligned with a web (c). The web (c) is then welded to flange (b) by filling holes (a) with weld metal so a row of "spot welds" is obtd. Holes (a) pref. have a dia. smaller than the thickness of flange (b), the dia. being esp. to of the thickness of flange (b). The ratio dia. of hole (a): the thickness of web (c) is pref. min. 1:1.5. The box girder pref. consists of an upper and a lower flange joined by a row of webs, the girder being used for mine shaft supports, esp. a shaft roof. A reliable and economic process for mfg. heavy duty steel box girders where good welds are obtd. is produced.
|
