In order to protect the piston rod of a hydraulic cylinder which moves a chain having links, especially a flyer chain, for example on fork-lift trucks, the chain has protective fishplates which are arranged firmly between the fishplates of the chain links and have free surfaces, with webs, which project at least on one side of the chain links.
