A screw press, the spindle nut or spindle (8) of which can be connected via an engaging and disengaging friction coupling to the continuously flywheel (21) for the working stroke of the screw press, and in which press a mechanical supporting device is inserted into the power flow from the flywheel (21) to the spindle nut or spindle (8), which supporting device reduces the friction connection in the friction coupling by means of displacement when a preselected, adjustable moment is exceeded, is improved by forming the friction coupling from a thrust collar (17) and a counterthrust collar (18), which is axially movable in relation to the said thrust collar (17) and is subjected to axial force, as a first coupling half, which is connected via the supporting device (20) to the flywheel (21); and from a coupling disc (16) which is connected to the spindle nut or spindle (8) in a non-rotating but axially displaceable manner, as a second coupling half, spreading elements (20) acting between the thrust collar (17) and the flywheel (21) being provided as a supporting device, which spreading elements (20) exert an axial force component during transmission of torque, which force component brings about a rotary movement of the friction coupling, as well as an axial movement which includes a vertex (Sp), when the axial force exerted on the counterthrust collar (18) is exceeded, and catches (37) being provided for the axial support of the counterthrust collar (18) when the friction coupling is lifted. <IMAGE>
