The air separator according to Figure 1 is equipped with a displacer element which, for the purpose of increasing the switching accuracy, reduces the free cross-section of the air separator such that the permissible fluctuations in level in this area correspond to the differences in volume prescribed by the weights and measures authorities. When they are arranged in a fixed fashion, displacer elements of this type effect an increased flow rate in this area of the air separator, this flow rate preventing, amongst other disadvantages, an air separation in this zone and beyond. The invention provides for the displacer element to be designed as a float which, in the operating state of the air separator, is raised up such that it does not hinder the flow of milk through the air separator and the degassing of the milk. When the metering is finished, the displacer element falls into its lower position and can then carry out the prescribed function of increasing the switching accuracy. <IMAGE>
