The method is characterised in that the soil mass is reduced at the front ahead of the front end, to be driven in, of the pipe (1) by directly forming a cavity (5) by means of a soil-borrowing device (4). The cavity (5) is made offset with regard to the axis of the pipe (1) with a cross-sectional area which is less than the cross-sectional area formed by the pipe (1) to be laid.
