A mixer for liquids, viscous compositions and similar flowable materials has a number of mixing shafts which are arranged in the form of a ring, are vertically aligned and driven in the same rotational direction, each of which shafts carries disc-like mixing elements spaced behind one another in an axial direction and lying in parallel planes, by means of which adjacent mixing shafts mesh. The mixing elements, together with the mixing shafts, enclose an inner chamber. The aim is to produce vigorous mixing combined with a simple construction, yet to achieve low-wear operation, easy cleaning and advantageous material discharge conditions; to this end the design provides for the inner chamber to be essentially sealed towards the material outlet side and to have a material return line opening thereinto, and for the mixing shafts at a radial spacing to the mixing elements to be surrounded by a casing concentric to the inner chamber, and for the annular chamber radially bounded by the casing and the mixing elements to communicate with screw-like conveyor elements which sit on the mixing shafts and on the material outlet side are connected to the material return line.
