PURPOSE:To obtain a low-cost hydrogen-absorbing electrode which has great discharge capacity and long charge-and-discharge cycle life and does not cause increased internal pressure of an alkaline storage battery by using an alloy represented by the formula CaNixMy (wherein M, x and y are specified) to form the electrode. CONSTITUTION:A hydrogen-absorbing electrode is formed by an alloy represented by the formula CaNixMy (M is at least one metal selected from the group consisting of Co, Fe, Cr, Cu, Mo, Mn, Al, Si and Sn. X and y are according to the formula 4<x+y<5.1<x<4. For example, after 100pts.wt. of a power of the CaNi3Co2 alloy is mixed with an aqueous dispersion of 5pts.wt. of a fluorine resin to make a paste, this paste is packed into a foamy porous nickel body before it is pressed with a pressure of about 200kg/cm<2> to make an electrode. An alkaline storage battery is assembled by combining this electrode used as a negative electrode with a positive nickel electrode having greater capacity than the negative electrode. |
