6-Methyl-3,4-dihydro-1,2,3-oxathiazin-4-on-2,2-dioxid und dessen nicht-toxische Salze werden hergestellt durch Umsetzung von Acetoacetamid mit einer S-O-Verbindung der Formel I FSO2Y (I), worin Y = F, Cl, -OSO2F oder -OSO2Cl, vorzugsweise nur F, in Gegenwart von Basen. Die nicht-toxischen Salze - insbesondere das Kaliumsalz - sind wertvolle synthetische Süßstoffe.
