The cylinder(s) of an engine is filled to only a part of the stroke vol. during the aspiration phase. E.g. with a 2 litre engine with has a compression ratio of 20:1, the intake is throttled so that only one litre of fuel mixt. is aspirated. This means that the practical compression ratio is only 10:1, which allows the engine to run without knocking. |
