PURPOSE:To obtain active carbon having improved adsorptivity, etc. at a low cost, by producing the active carbon from pitch of a distillation residue in a liquefied oil obtained by hydrogenating coal as a raw material by the chemical activation method utilizing effectively the pitch. CONSTITUTION:Coal is hydrogenated, liquefied and distilled to produce a liquefied oil and give pitch which is a distillation residue as a by-product. The resultant solid pitch is then suitably pulverized, and anhydrous powdery zinc chloride is added and mixed therewith. The mixture is then introduced into a corrosion- resistant and heat-resistant container. The interior of the container is heated at about 400-700 deg.C from the outside while keeping the interior thereof in a nitrogen atmosphere, and the solid pitch and zinc chloride are fluidized and activated with zinc chloride. The activated pitch is then washed with aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid, filtered and dried to give the aimed active carbon. |
