PURPOSE:To produce the titled resin excellent in heat stability and heat resistance in good yields, by emulsion-copolymerizing alpha-methylstyrene with vinyl cyanide, adding an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid ester and vinyl cyanide to the reaction system and bringing the polymerization of the reaction mixture to completion. CONSTITUTION:90-99pts.wt. monomer mixture comprising 75-82wt% alpha-methylstyrene, 25-18wt% vinyl cyanide (e.g., acrylonitrile) and 0-7wt% monomer copolymerizable therewith (e.g., styrene) is emulsion-polymerized in the presence of an initiator (e.g., potassium persulfate) to a polymer conversion >=75wt%. To this reaction mixture, 1-10pts.wt. monomer mixture comprising 0.5-5pts.wt. ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid ester (e.g., methyl acrylate) and 0.5- 5pts.wt. vinyl cyanide is added and the polymerization of the reaction mixture is brought to completion. |
