Mechanism for cleaning and removing stains from textile items such as garments or upholstery material, mainly but not exclusively for domestic use, claimed as new - comprises a sealingly closable cylindrical pressure vessel into which the item is arranged in rolled-up form around an upwardly closed co-axial perforated vertical tube and weighted down by a disc slidable on the tube. A pump moves a solvent such as 1,1,1-trichloro-ethane, from a supply container below the vessel through the perforations and the textile material until the air pressure in the vessel reaches a given limit (e.g. 3-4 bar) when the pump is stopped by a pressure switch and the solvent forced back into the container by the pressure. This cycle is repeated a pre-set number of times.
