The door handle and lock mechanism includes a handle (3) mounted on a shaft (7) to move the latch (4). Parallel to and near to the axis of rotation of the handle is a pushbutton (5). This has a shaft (5b) extending into the body of the lock through a hole (6). A shoulder (5e) on the shaft retains a spring (9) which holds the button in its outer position. The inner end of the shaft acts on a plate (12) to move a lever (13) vertically downwards as the two parts pivot about a hinge (14). The movement of the lever operates an electrical switch (1) connected via terminals (15a, 15b) and flexible wires to the local light circuit. The pushbutton is operated by one finger as the door is opened.
