<p>Ortho-isopropoxyphenol having the formula (I) is prepd. by reacting pyrocatechol having the formula (II) with an isopropyl halide having the formula (III) in the presence of an alkaline base in the solid state and of a solid-liquid phase-transfer catalyst, in a reaction medium of one or more organic solvents. (In (III), X = Halogen). - Pref. X = Br; and the base is sodium or potassium carbonate or sodium or potassium hydroxide. Suitable solvents include hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, ketones and nitriles. Pref. a mixture of a polar and a poorly polar solvent is used, esp. a low-boiling alcohol and a high-boiling hydrocarbon.</p> |
