EP--41349 A Nuclear reactor fuel element comprises an array of rods. Each rod has a zirconium alloy sheath and contains nuclear fuel pellets. The rods are pressurised by helium gas. The pressure in each rod differs from that in each of its nearest neighbours. The element is suitable for a pressurised water reactor. - On occurrence of a low temperature transient, the higher pressure rods can swell without interference from lower pressure neighbours. A high temperature transient causes rupture of the high pressure rods so that they do not obstruct deformation of low pressure rods, and coolant channels are not blocked in either case. The gaspressure in each rod differs in the same relative sense from that of all the closest neighbouring rods such that the latter are all at higher or lower pressure than the first rod. - The array is pref. square, with higher and lower pressure rods alternating at pressures of 2-3 and 0.5-1.75 MPa.
|
