5,11-Dihydro 11-((4-methyl piperazin-1-yl) acetyl) 6H-pyrido (2,3-b) 1,4-benzodiazepin-6-one, of formula (I) is made by reacting 2-chloro 3-amino pyridine with isatoic anhydride at 100 -125 deg.C to give a cpd. (II); (b) condensing this at 200-210 deg.C to form (III); (c) treating this with chloracetyl chloride in presence of triethylamine and in toluene to give (IV); (d) reacting (IV) with diethanolamine and powdered NaOH in benzene to produce (V); (e) treating this with SOCl2 in CHCl3 to obtain (VI); and (f) reacting (VI) with methylamine in presence of benzyl triethyl ammonium chloride and NaOH to obtain the prod. (I) and its acceptable salts.
