A process for the production of an aromatic polyketone which comprises polymerising an appropriate monomer or monomers by a Friedel-Crafts polymerisation reaction using a Lewis acid catalyst. A controlling agent such as a Lewis base can be added to the reaction medium and/or the reaction can be performed under specific conditions for controlling it. The quantity of Lewis acid, the quantity of Lewis base, the reaction temperature and the molar ratio of monomer to diluent can vary depending on the monomer system(s) to obtain substantially linear high molecular weight polymers which can be shaped by fusion, e.g. poly(carbonyl-p-phenylene-oxy-p-phenylene), poly(carbonyl-p-phenylene-oxy-p-phenylene-oxy-p- phenylene), and analogues. |
