Alkanol derivs. of formula (I) are new. In (I), R=alpha-methyl-benzyl, alpha,alpha-dimethyl-benzyl, PhCH2C(Me)2-, PhCH2CH(Br), PhCH=CH, PhCH=CBr or CH2=CHCH2C(Me)2-; X=H, 1-4C alkyl or halogen; R2=H or 1-4C alkyl. - 3 Cpds. of (I) are specifically claimed viz 1-nitro-3,3-dimethyl -4-phenyl-2-butanol (Ia) 1-bromo-1-nitro-3,3- dimethyl-4-phenyl-2-butanol and 1-bromo-1-nitro -3,3-dimethyl-5-hexen-2-ol.
