The cells contg. the T-DNA sequence of an Agrobacterium plasmid, the T-DNA contg. a biologically functional foreign gene, are new. - The foreign DNA is incorporated, replicated and expressed in the green algal cell, and eukaryotic or prokaryotic DNA may be transferred to the cells. With the genes prods. obtd. on cultivation include proteins esp. hormone and serum proteins, and enzymes. - The foreign DNA may be eukaryotic and/or prokaryotic DNA. The green algae are pref. Chlamydomonas reinhardii, Protosiphon botroides or Chlorella pyrenoidosa. The foreign DNA may contain a selection marker. - The Agrobacterium strain is infected with the engineered plasmid, and this plasmid is obtd. by the usual techniques. The strain is used as a culture at mid- to late log phase selection by plating etc. is used.
