The process comprises reaction of ethyl nitrocinnamate of formula (II) with methyl crotonate of formula (III) in equimolar proportions to produce cpd. of formula (I). The reaction taken place in a solvent which is a lower alkanol such as methanol, at the solvent reflux temp., under thin-layer chromatography control. Vacuum distillation, freezing at 0-5 deg., and filtration, are followed by washing and crystallisation.
