Coating is applied as directed stream of fibres which is coated during application by a tacky inorganic binder; coated fibres are cured at above pref. 350 deg.F. Binder is phosphate matrix admixed with a tackifying agent, and is specifically 75-85% phosphoric acid, 1-5% tackifying agent (pref. montmorillonite or bentonite clay), 1-2 Cr cpd. (oxide) and 10-20% hydrated alumina; opt. included is colloidal suspension of pref. Al2O3, SiO2 or ZrO2. Application is by spray gun delivering fibre in an annular path and having at least one nozzle spraying binder onto outside of path and at least one nozzle within annulus.
