Prodn. of a methane-rich, pipeline-quality gas from a raw gas mixt. comprising (i) synthesis gas (I) having an H2/CO ratio of 0.9-1.3 and (ii) a S-contg. gas (II) is effected by: (a) subjecting the raw gas mixt. to direct methanation in the presence of a first catalyst (III) and without addition of steam; (b) scrubbing the intermediate product gas (IV) for removal of acid gases; and (c) reacting the residual H2 and CO in the scrubbed (IV) over a second catalyst (V) yield a product gas contg. increased amts. of methane and less than 0.1 vol.% CO.
