Zeolite L is prepd. from an alkaline reaction mixture of water, a source of silicon and a source of aluminium having the molar ratios, expressed as oxides, of M2O:SiO2 0.24-0.35, pref. 0.30-0.35; H2O:M2O 35-80, pref. 35-80; and SiO2:Al2O3 5.7-7.8, pref. 6-7.5; heated to above 200 deg.C to form zeolite L. The compsn. of the reaction mixt. of the prefd. embodiment is 2.5-3.4 K2O:1.3-1.66 Al2O3:10 SiO2:120-180 H2O (I) in which the reaction mixt. is heated to 200-250 deg.C. Crystallisation is discontinued prior to the transformation of zeolite L to other crystalline phases, pref. in less than 48, specifically in 5-15 hours.
