The hand appliance for separating a number of balls from a larger number consists essentially of the container (1) with the balls (2) contained therein and of the ball trap (6). These two parts are rotated relative to one another, until the passage orifice (10) in the container bottom (8) and the depression (11) in the ball trap (6) overlap one another, as a result of which a ball (2) falls into the depression (11). To bring about the overlap of the passage orifice and depression in a simpler way, there is provided the fixing ball (14) which is under spring pressure and which, when the ball trap (6) is rotated, engages into the corresponding recess (15) in the container bottom (8). Depending on the intended use, there can also be provided a plurality of depressions (11) which are filled individually or in succession, whereupon the balls (2) marked with numbers, symbols or colours are read off or evaluated. The appliance can be used for the completely random selection of time intervals for checking purposes, for games, as an aid in the filling out of lottery tickets or pools coupons and the like. <IMAGE>
