MONITORING ROTATIONAL MOVEMENT

A system for monitoring the angular position of a rotary element CS, such as a manual control shaft in a lathe or other machining apparatus, includes means for generating two phase- displaced trains of pulses in accordance with rotation of the element, means for sampling the states of the two trains at intervals and, in response to a change in state of one or other train comparing (on the one hand) the new states and the previous states of the two trains against (on the other hand) stored references in order to identify transitions in the pulse trains. Predetermine identified transitions are counted to determine the magnitude and direction of rotary displacement of the element.
