<p>A piston for an internal combustion engine is provided with a crown portion (10) heat insulated from the remainder of the piston (11) over all or substantially all of the area of the crown, to reduce the transfer of heat from the crown to the remainder of the piston. The crown portion being made of a material more heat resistant than the material of at least part of the remainder of the piston.
