<p>Material, partic. metal, alloy or silicon, is cast into a thin strip by an electromagnetic field. The material is shaped so that the first part(26) of the melt is a strip, while a second part(31) is contained solely by the electromagnetic field to from a sump, having a surface cross-section at least five times greater than that of the strip. The melt is pref. shaped by an inductor (11) having two isolated sections which form the strip. Strip thickness is pref. up to 0.25 inch. The casting run may be started with a single seed crystal to give a single crystal strip, and the strip may be coiled to give a very long casting.</p> |
