Disclosed are novel aqueous drilling fluid compositions containing a lubrication additive and a method of drilling wells wherein the underground formation is contacted with such drilling fluid compositions. The lubrication additive is a polyolefin in aqueous solution having a molecular weight between about 500 and about 2000 with one or more substituent groups of the formula: <IMAGE> where X is sulfur or oxygen, y is 0 or 1 and z is 0 or 1, provided that either y or z=1.
