In order to determine the measurement 't' for laying of, for example, asphalt, which is being laid on a road section (31) by an asphalt layer (1) which has a sledge (11,11A, 11B) for laying at an adjustable width 'b', there is a calculator (20), into which is continuously fed the width of the sledge and the machine's backward laid extent 'a'. Additionally the calculator is fed with the mass and volume 'V' of laid surfacing material and from these values, the measurement required is calculated according to the formula<IMAGE>and shown on a display at the calculator.
